Lee Morgan was a profound talent that the world was sad to lose when he was tragically shot and killed at the age of 33 by his common-law wife, Helen Morgan. In the new documentary “I Called Him Morgan”, Swedish filmmaker Kasper Collin elects to tell the tale of the trumpeter’s life using a 1996 interview given by Helen as a backdrop. The film will screen in New York City at the IFC Center on Tuesday, March 7, and it will also be shown later in the month at Lincoln Center on Friday, March 24. The 90-second excerpt below looks promising. I have my ticket for March 7 and I hope to see you there!
